P class diesel electric locomotives
MODEL: G18HB-R

P 17 at South Dynon loco depot in the V/line scheme that the class were delivered in, 1986

In the early 1980's Victorian passenger services were modernised, commuter services got upgraded steel cars (H cars) and to pull them 13 first series T class were extensively rebuilt. The most notable change during rebuilding was the addition of a diesel engine to provide head end power for the H cars. Other upgrades included modern air and electrical systems and an 8 cylider 645 E engine. A few years after their introduction the P's started operating in push-pull service where a P class would be at each end of the train. With privatisation the class was split up between V/Line pass. and Freight Victoria.

All of the P's were rebuilt at Clyde's Somerton, Victoria plant
