These units were a combination of power units built by the Walker Railcar company, Wigan England and bodies built Martin & King in Victoria, the whole contraption was assembled at Newport workshops. There were actually 13 power units "RM 13" being a spare. No's 1 & 5 were different to the rest of the class, they had a smaller van area and 6 side windows between the van and the door instead of the usual 5, this increased economy passenger capacity by 5.
