G class diesel electric locomotives
MODEL: JT26C-2SS

By the mid 1980's V/Line realised that it was time to start replacing their first generation mainline diesels with modern high horsepower locos. Their introduction (along with the N class) saw the withdrawl of most B and S class. About this time most remaining branches were being upgraded to allow the use of these heavier locos. The G's were quite similar mechanically to the C class except for two important differences. They were equipped with the standard dash 2, modular electrical system and they were fitted with Super Series wheelslip control. They were the first mainline diesels delivered without automatic staff exchangers. There are differences within the class, the first 5 had the bigger AR 16 generator/alternator compared to the rest of the class that recieved the smaller AR 11. Other differences can be found in the specifications on the diagrams at the bottom of the page. The first 5 G's were actually an extension of AN's order for BL's and were built at Clyde's Rosewater, South Australia plant. G's 516 - 525 were also built at Rosewater. G 526 - 543 were built at Clyde's Somerton, Victoria plant.
