The RY's were all converted from IZ, GZ and HZ wagons. Outside sill (shown above) numbers 2 - 599, 761 - 810. The outside sill type were all from IZ wagons with wheel handbrakes

Inside sill, (shown below) numbers 600 - 760, 811 - 2000, wheel and lever handbrakes.

RY 50 was built as IZ 50 at Newport in 1928. At some stage it recieved a welded body.

RY 819 was built at Newport as IZ 819 in 1934, recoded to RY in 1964
Although not common, RY's and in fact any other 4 wheel open wagons were at times used for container transport,
it was rather crude as there were no container anchors and the container was free to slide around as it appears has happened here!

For the 1978/79 wheat harvest VR was so short of wagons that they pressed non grain wagons into wheat service. In this service the doors were given a quick fix to make them grainproof , at Portland I saw wide tape hanging from the doors as they were being unloaded. The need for wagons was so severe that the person making the stencil below didn't have time to spell "temporary" correctly!

RY 1977: Built as GZ 1977 at Bendigo in 1939, recoded to IZ 197 circa 1956, recoded to RY 1977 in 1965, scrapped 1980. Photo at Nth Melbourne workshops 1978. Quite a few RY's were stencilled for dedicated traffic. I don't know why the stencilled RY's were not recoded to HD like most wagons in departmental service.

IZ 322 was in service 1929, recoded to RY circa 1964, scrapped 1977, photo date circa 1932.

IZ 423 was in service 1930, recoded to RY 1964, it ended up as a KQ conversion in 1973 and was finally scrapped 1980, photo date circa 1935.
This photo shows the original pressed ends which were replaced when most of the class were fitted with HY type ends
